Common Poisonous Plants and Mushrooms of North America
Published in Paperback by Timber Pr (April, 1995)
Average review score:

Plant Lore is Unequaled but Mushroom Data is Often "Lore".Dr. Turners books are without a doubt unparalleled regarding her ability to use the trust she has cultivated with the indigenous peoples of the PNW. This gives her an entirely unique and very interesting look at hows plant were used by the native populations of this and surrounding areas. The people who would find her writing fascinating would cut across many disciplines from of course not only botany but anthropology, archaeology, paleontology; perhaps even modern "new-age" religious seekers. Having said that though, I dearly wish she would quit deviating in to the field of mycology. I'm not exactly sure where she gets her info from, but I suspect that working under the auspices of the BC Provincial Museum, that she has elected to defer to the often antiquated mycological texts from the among the ranks of those in the possesion of professors in the back rooms of the museum that are gathering as much dust as are the books that they in turn rely upon for ID'ing the fungi.

Company Town
Published in Paperback by Arsenal Pulp Press (September, 1991)
Average review score:

Company TownThis is a wonderful collection of poetry. Fragmentary, and highly charged, it is a fictional account of the last days of a Salmon Cannery along the Sheenan River in British Columbia. The narrative takes a number of forms; lists, declarattions, snippets of gossip; but slowly, in their own voices, the miriad characters of the "Company Town" step forward, and have their say. The writing is wry and razor-sharp. A wonderful book, a wonderful read, and a fantastic document of the working class experience -- Even if it is fictional!

Conversations with Eric Clapton

Fragile ClaptonVery interesting insight into the life of Eric Clapton just before and after quitting heroin. Clapton is absolutely not stable and changes his mind and stories from day to day. A look behind his usual shield.

The Creative Process: A Computer Model of Storytelling and Creativity
Published in Hardcover by Lawrence Erlbaum Assoc (August, 1994)
Average review score:

towards a computer based story generationThis book presents a nice approach to story generation using a problem solving technique. Even though Turner suggests that stories generated by this approach seem to imply creative, we think that they do not. However, the question of creativity, at this point, is irrelevant. What is relavent is that the model does tell stories that seem good enough to read. Granted that the stories generated using this approach cannot compare to Shakespearian or even modern playwriters' stories in terms of quality. It is, nevertheless, a start towards a computer based story generator.

Cultural Studies (Cultural Studies Journal)
Published in Paperback by Taylor & Francis Books Ltd (28 March, 1991)
Average review score:

Compelling collection of cultural studies essaysGrossberg, Nelson, and Treichler have compiled a compelling collection of cultural studies essays. The selections in the book examine cultural studies from multiple angles, demonstrating the difficulty in identifying one encompassing definition of cultural studies. The differences do not create dissonance, however; rather they create a thought provoking collection that is worth reading.

Darts/the Complete Book of the Game
Published in Paperback by HarperCollins (paper) (October, 1985)
Average review score:

Not modern, but informativeThough out of print at this time, I bought this book a couple of years ago and think it deserves a review here. The fact is, there are no really modern books about the game, books that give an idea about modern/electronic play and innovations, but this short text has a solid historical overview. Like several other books currently available, it is from a British perspective and dates from the late 1970's. Unlike several others, it doesn't pretend to teach you how to win, at least not past the anecdotal story at the beginning from some past champion. As we all know, improving at darts is simply a matter of practice. This book, though, has information about various past styles of dartboard and a refreshingly nonconformist chapter on the history of the game. One gets the impression that the author would not be happy with the current state of darts as a coin-op/Americanized bar game! Worth a look if you know what to expect.

The Dell Book of Logic Problems, No 5
Published in Paperback by Dell Books (Paperbacks) (November, 1992)
Average review score:

A good book, but not for beginners or advanced playersI think the book is great, but if you are a beginner there are only a couple easy puzzles. The same is true if you are advanced. Only the intermediete players can get the most out of the book. I would like to see a book for different levels.

Fantasic. I couldn't put it down!!!As Edward Robb Ellis was writing his diary I was being born. I've often wondered what my pre-though, pre-war life was like now I know. Through the eyes of one man who's life mirrored, yet preceded, my own 30 years later. I wonder, in 1998, is ERE still alive. I hope so!!
